Meraki MX100 end of life: replacement options, prices and support

Cisco Meraki's support for the MX100 ends on February 1, 2027. It went end of sale on February 1, 2022. Its firmware is capped at MX 18.1. Meraki's own end-of-sale notice names the MX95 as the "functionally equivalent" replacement. The MX lifetime hardware warranty ends on the same date as support.

What the MX100 is

A rack-mount cloud-managed security and SD-WAN appliance, managed only from the Meraki dashboard. Meraki describes it as built "for distributed deployments that require remote administration". It has two GbE SFP ports, a USB port for a 3G/4G failover modem, 1 TB of cache storage for WAN acceleration and a dedicated management port. One LAN port can be set as a second WAN uplink.

What end of support means for this unit

  • Firmware stops at MX 18.1. Meraki's MX features directory says MX 18.1 "will be the maximum running build" for the MX64, MX65, MX84, MX100 and vMX100, and that these platforms "will not run MX 18.2 and above" (Meraki MX features directory). The MX95 and MX105 are on current releases.
  • The hardware warranty ends at End of Support. MX appliances carry a lifetime warranty, and Meraki states that "product lifetime ends at the product End-of-Support (EOST) date" (Meraki returns, warranties and end-of-life). After February 1, 2027 a failed MX100 is not replaced under warranty.
  • The licence decides whether it passes traffic. If an organization's licensing lapses, Meraki allows a 30-day grace period. After that, devices in a shut-down organization "cease to pass client traffic" (Meraki licensing documentation). Plan the replacement around both the support date and your licence term.

Staying on Meraki, same roleMX95: Meraki's named replacement, same dashboard, about 6 times the 2014 stateful figure
Staying on Meraki, need headroom or redundant powerMX105: same ports as the MX95, higher throughput, removable power supply

Sources: Meraki MX95/105 datasheet; FortiGate 120G datasheet; Palo Alto PA-400 Series datasheet. Each vendor measures differently: Meraki quotes stateful and NGFW-detection figures, Fortinet enterprise mix, Palo Alto appmix with threat features on. Compare within a vendor. "n/a" means the vendor does not publish that figure.

How each option compares with the MX100

  • Meraki MX95. Same: Meraki dashboard, Auto VPN, the same licence model, rack mount. Different: four WAN uplinks instead of two, 10G SFP+ and 2.5G ports, a 2.5G PoE-capable WAN port, and current MX firmware. Meraki positions it for "Medium branch environments". The MX lifetime warranty applies again from purchase.
  • Meraki MX105. The MX95's ports with higher throughput and a removable MA-PWR-150WAC power supply. Choose it if the MX100 was near its limits.
  • FortiGate 120G. FortiOS, managed on the box or through FortiManager instead of a cloud dashboard. Its published firewall and IPsec figures are far above the MX95's and MX105's, though the vendors measure differently. It adds 4 x 10G SFP+ ports.
  • Palo Alto PA-450. PAN-OS with App-ID, managed on the box or through Panorama. Palo Alto's threat figure is measured with every threat feature on.

Migrating from an MX100

  • MX100 to MX95 or MX105: Meraki documents a "cold swap": remove the MX100 from its dashboard network and add the replacement to the same network, or clone the network first. Local settings such as a static WAN IP are set on the new unit's Local Status Page before it can reach the dashboard, and site-to-site VPN may need re-enabling. Port numbering differs between models; Meraki's guide includes a port-mapping table (How to replace an existing MX using a cold swap).
  • Licence count: adding the replacement before removing the MX100 can push an organization over its licensed device count. Meraki's RMA page warns that "a licensing compliance warning may appear" in that case. The MX95 also needs its own licence; the licence part numbers are model-specific (LIC-MX95-SEC-1Y, for example).
  • Leaving Meraki: plan to rebuild firewall rules, VLANs and VPN settings on the new platform, or check whether the target vendor's migration tool accepts a Meraki configuration before you budget the time.

Claimed or unclaimed. A Meraki device that is still claimed in another organization cannot be added to yours. Meraki's inventory documentation says support "cannot assist in moving/removing devices that have already been claimed to another organization" (Meraki organization inventory). Only the previous owner can release it. One listing seen on 2026-10-06 was marked "Claimed" and priced at USD 15.

Third-party maintenance

Third-party maintenance covers hardware. Licences and MX firmware come only from Cisco Meraki, and the MX 18.1 ceiling applies whoever maintains the box. An MX100 depends on Meraki's dashboard and licensing to pass traffic, so hardware cover alone does not extend its useful life past what Meraki supports. Spare units and a replacement date before February 1, 2027 are the practical plan.
